  1. Summary
  2. Background
  3. Hype

Open-world games are this generation's platform games. It's a market filled with countless variations on the same theme. 2006's Just Cause was one of these variations, and it was intriguing, thanks in part to a combination of ridiculousness and scale. It had grappling hooks and surfing on planes and a massive island to explore. It was also fairly boring in environment design and had quite a few bugs. Avalanche Studios has waited four years to follow up and fix their first game's shortcomings, and the result is Just Cause 2. Much like any sequel, it has a legacy to live up to. It has to improve upon the first game while simultaneously introducing new and interesting elements to the mix. It hasn't received that much hype, thanks in part to the developer's unknown status, but it's definitely something to take a look at. After all, everyone loves open world games.
