Interview: Tragnarion Studios talks about The Scourge Project

More and more small game developers are using tools created for AAA companies to create game titles. The latest example is Spain-based Tragnarion Studios. Earlier this month the company announced that their long-in-development co-op shooter The Scourge Project is due for release for the PC later in December.

Little is known about the game itself at the moment but Big Download got the company's rep Jean-Philip Rodriguez to give us the 411 on the game which uses Epic's Unreal Engine 3.
First, tell us a bit about Tragnarion Studios itself?

Tragnarion is a Game Developer based in Palma of Mallorca (Spain) and is focused on bringing highly original and creative titles to the home console and digital download arenas. We have the rare combination of industry-leading creativity with the drive and ability to execute our original ideas.

How did the idea for The Scourge Project come about?

Years ago when we first started there were still very few high-profile games with Co-op functionality. Those that did exist were generally Single-Player first and foremost, with Co-op tacked on as almost an afterthought. So we took that basic hook and integrated a couple of other things which we felt would work well with it, such as Player-specific story content for example. Being fans of psychological thrillers and sci-fi movies, we had a lot of different story ideas that we went through during development which we thought would be fun to experience for the first time while playing in a group of friends, in addition to the action-packed gameplay of course! We're looking forward to seeing the response from Players!

The game itself was announced over two years ago. Why the long wait to completion?

In all honesty, there was a pretty steep learning curve for our team in attempting a project of this size and getting to grips with a tool as powerful as the Unreal Engine 3 and really getting the most out of it. In any case I would say that considering the relatively small size of our team compared to many, we've actually done quite a lot in those two years.

What can you tell us about the storyline for the game?

It's set around 20 years in the future, and you take the role of any of four playable characters, who are all members of Echo Squad, a group of mercenaries hired by an organization of anti-corporate saboteurs named The Tarn Initiative. As the game starts you're just about to touch-down on what is supposed to be your final mission for Tarn, having spent the last few months working towards this goal. You've just received contact from Dr Eugene Reisbeck, a Tarn spy inside Nogari Corporation, which is a power-hungry mega-corporation that pretty much rules the world from the shadows. Nogari has some dark secrets behind the amazing new energy source that they are using to hook and control all the worlds nations and economies, and Tarn is determined to bring these secrets to light. Once you reach Nogari Island, things immediately begin to unravel, putting your lives in danger unless you can reach Reisbeck fast enough. There are certainly some surprises in store, including character-specific content that will definitely keep you guessing, but I wouldn't want to spoil things by revealing too much more!

What can you tell us about the playable characters?

There are four playable characters who make up Echo Squad, each of which has a different combination of a core set of special abilities common to the Tarn Initiative's Ambrosia Suit technology. There's Stonewall, the stoic ex-US Ranger who detests the dishonor of mercenary work but does it achieve his ultimate goal; Amp, an adrenalin-fueled war-junkie who is desperate to get into Nogari's laboratories for her own private reasons; Mass, a Scottish ex-SAS powerhouse who is willing to risk his life for another; and finally Shade, an Argentinian assassin who has a private vendetta against Nogari. Tarn has had trouble finding mercenaries who will take on this final job, but in Echo Squad they've found four people whose personal agendas put their interests in the same basket.
