Electronic Arts' recent cut backs in staff were not just a cost cutting measure, at least according to its CEO John Riccitiello. Reuters reports that during its annual Global Media Summit on Tuesday, Riccitiello stated that they were also looking to the future where it would release fewer games in retail stores.
He states EA currently publishes over 50 titles per year but plans to bring that down to 40 games for its next fiscal year. In fact Riccitiello said, "Thirty wouldn't shock me at some point in the future." EA now sees downloadable games and services becoming a bigger force in the game industry. In fact we can already see that downloadable content for games like Dragon Age: Origins and the upcoming Mass Effect 2 is more of a priority than it has been in the past.

Release fewer titles to make more money? Hmm this does sound like an idea born from EA. I smell microtransaction games in the future.Posted at 1:39AM on Dec 4th 2009 by Solice
