Left 4 Dead 2 Guide: Flood of Hard Rain

It's been a year since the incredibly addicting and entertaining zombie killfest Left 4 Dead was unleashed, and Valve has released its sequel to an excited consumer base. Filled with Spitters, Witches, Fuel, and Cola, it's a great new romp for those that loved the original. It's also much more difficult. For those that can't handle what the new AI Director is throwing at them, don't worry. We've got your back with this handy guide!

You've boarded the ship and are now heading to safety... only the boat is running out of fuel. It's time to go inland and help get the supplies you need to restock. This is the gist of Hard Rain, which starts off relatively normal and then ratchets up the intensity with the second stage. It's an incredibly unique campaign, probably the most of the five present in Left 4 Dead 2, thanks to a number of features. Rising flood water, backtracking, and avoiding Witches are just a sample of what awaits you.

Stage 1: Milltown

Setting: Your boat has dropped you off in a same farming town to try and find some diesel for his boat. Unfortunately, it has started to rain and it is near dusk, so you must hurry through the town as quickly as possible, as the gas station he dropped you next to is all out of gas. The only gas is located two miles away. This is a fairly easy stage with no Crescendo Event. You must move through several streets lines with houses before you come across a house at the edge of the sugar mill. This is the safehouse.

General Tips

  • There are lots of weapons and supplies scattered around throughout the town. Take note of where they are, as you will be using them on the way back.
  • As well as weapons, you should take note of places that are upraised. These locations will also be important come the return trip.
  • It is raining, but not very hard. However, there will be pools of water scattered around, which do slow you down, so stay out of them.

Stage 2: Sugar Mill

Setting: It's time for one of the scariest, most frustrating levels in the entire game. If you read the graffiti on the wall of the safehouse, you have a general idea of what you are in for. Witches. Lots and lots of Witches. You must make your way through this Witch infested territory to the gas station located on the other side of the sugar mill property, where you will pick up diesel and make preparations for the trip back to the dock.

Crescendo Event: You have to make your way to the top of an abandoned structure that looks similar to a parking garage. You must then activate the elevator, which sparks off a Horde. This is a tough fight if you don't know what to do. Here's the only concrete rule for this event: do not stand by the edges. You can (and will) get knocked to your death. The best place in general to hole up is in the small rooms on the sides of the building. You can grab propane tanks, and only a Spitter will be able to knock you out of your hiding spot. Once the elevator is there, take it down to the fields.

General Tips

  • The sugar fields are your worst enemy. They are absolutely crawling with Witches. However, the one place that has no witches is the center along the pipe, so it is suggested that you just follow the pipe out.
  • This place has a lot of places that look like you can get on top of them. Remember these places, as they will come in handy during the next stage.
  • There is an achievement for not startling any witch during this stage, and it's a tough one. It is highly suggested you try, though, because there are upwards of ten Witches alone in this stage. Every set piece has a Witch.
