Interview: We chat with Exor Studios about Zombie Driver

Zombies are all the rage (no pun intended) in games nowadays and next week a new title is to join the already crowded ranks of the undead. However Zombie Driver, from the indie development team at Exor Studios, has some new tricks. Instead of action on foot you get to drive several different types of vehicles, each heavily armed and ready to take out the flesh-eating horde.

Big Download got a chance to ask some questions to Exor Studios' Pawel Lekki about the formation of the developer and some more info on the game itself which is scheduled to be released via download sites next week.

First how did Exor Studios come to be formed?

Exor was first founded as an informal group of people in late 2003 when as amateurs we started to create levels and maps for games such as StarCraft, Half-Life, Quake 3 and others. We've know each other for a long time mostly from school or the university. Our goal at that time was to release a vehicle combat mod for Half-Life 2 called D.I.P.R.I.P. In late 2005 all 7 of us were hired by a mobile game development company - Gamelion. That gave us the opportunity to make games for mobile phones for some of the biggest publishers such as EA Mobile, Sony, Nokia and others. After about 2 years we decided that it is time to start our own company and make games for the PC and consoles. EXOR Studios was founded in August 2007 so a little bit more than 2 years ago.

How did the idea behind Zombie Driver come about?

The concept was created by Tomasz Tulikowski when we decided to make a small arcade game with lots of fun. We had a bunch of ideas but finally we decided that Zombie Driver is the best one. It's a mix of the old school GTA1 and Carmageddon with some new and unique gameplay features. We have also taken a lot of inspiration from D.I.P.R.I.P. - a free mod created on the Source Engine that we released on Steam after founding EXOR Studios.

Zombies seem to be everywhere in games these days. Why pick them as the basis for your first game?

We wanted to create an arcade game that combines retro GTA1 top down view with elements from Carmageddon and D.I.P.R.I.P.. Zombies were a natural choice for an enemy for a game like that and we have built the story on top of that. In GTA1 or Carmageddon the pedestrians on the streets were not a threat to you so zombies are in this case better since they are the menace.

Is there a fictional back story to the game that you can tell us about?

There is a story that players gradually unveil during the game. I don't want to spoil too much before you can play the game, but basically you are starting as a lucky survivor in a city full of zombies, surrounded by military quarantine. Your first car with which you managed to get to a field military base is a cab. Since you can't leave the city because of the quarantine you start rescuing other people. During those missions you slowly uncover what has actually happened with the city.

What different kinds of vehicles and weapons are a part of Zombie Driver?

There are 7 different cars in Zombie Driver. Starting with a cab you very soon gain a sports car and a limo which are completely different in how you drive. In further missions you can drive a bus, an ambulance, a police car and finally a military prototype vehicle which is very powerful against zombies. As for the weapons you start only with a civilian car but very soon gain access to machine guns and a flame thrower. Turbo is considered to be one of the weapons since you can easily break through groups of zombies while using it. The next weapons are rockets and a prototype railgun. Each weapon has its advantages and disadvantages and can be upgraded. Weapon upgrades really make a difference since for example fully upgraded rocket launcher will fire two a lot more powerful rockets instead of one.
