New Command & Conquer head man hints about future plans

After the retail release of Command & Conquer 4 this March, Electronic Arts has plans to revamp its long running RTS franchise. Earlier this month, the publisher announced that Jon Van Caneghem, best known as the main creative force behind the Might and Magic RPG franchise, has been hired to take the C&C series in a new "digital" direction. That likely means the next C&C game might not be sold in stores

Industry Gamers chatted briefly with Van Caneghem about his new gig, and while he's not revealing any gameplay details yet he does state, " . . .if you think about what online has done for RPGs over the years, I think we'll see it happen for RTS games and I want to be on the leading edge for that." What about turning the series into a free-to-play game a la Battlefield Heroes? Van Caneghem states that could be possible but adds, "We're focused on building the game first and then thinking of all the different ways, especially in the different territories, to monetize it."
