Left 4 Dead 2 Guide: Identifying New Threats

It's been a year since the incredibly addicting and entertaining zombie killfest Left 4 Dead was unleashed, and Valve has released its sequel to an excited consumer base. Filled with Spitters, Witches, Fuel, and Cola, it's a great new romp for those that loved the original. It's also much more difficult. For those that can't handle what the new AI Director is throwing at them, don't worry. We've got your back with this handy guide!

Left 4 Dead 2 introduces three new Special Infected, tweaks some of the original Infected, and introduces a new class: the Uncommon Infected. All in all, there are now a total of 14 different kinds of zombies! However, the Common Infected and three of the original five Special Infected have not changed at all from their original incarnations beyond minor cosmetic changes. If you want a general overview of the original cast of Infected, the Left 4 Dead identification guide has all you need.

Changes To Old Specials

Witches: Witches will now move around. You thought they were nasty before, but now they can surprise you by bumping into you on your way through a level simply because they do not stay in one place. This is especially true in the Sugar Mill portion of Hard Rain, where Witches are in quite literally every separate location.

Boomer: There are now both male and female Boomers. While this sounds like a purely aesthetic reason (as most of the other Special changes are), there is a gameplay change behind it as well: multiple boomers can now be on the field at once. It's quite distressing to kill one Boomer while the other sneaks up to and vomits on you.

Uncommon Infected

These infected are roughly as difficult (and durable) as a Common Infected, but they have a unique ability tacked on. These abilities are in now way as powerful as the Special Infected abilities, but they can be a hassle, especially during Horde attacks.

CEDA Agents: CEDA Agents are Infected in modern haz-mat suits. They are very conspicuous thanks to the gleaming white suit amidst the grime of the standard Infected. They take the same amount of damage as Common Infected, with one very important exception. CEDA Agents are immune to fire, which means that molotovs, gas cans, and incendiary rounds are completely useless against them.

Construction Workers: Construction workers are sometimes hard to notice, so look for their bright yellow helmets. They are the same as any other Common Infected, but they can not be killed through explosions and ignore some events because of their headgear, such as pipe bombs. While this is hardly a problem in the normal campaign mode, it can be killer on Realism, as pipe bombs are essential to survival in that mode.

Mudmen: Mudmen crawl on all fours like the Jockey or Hunter, but thankfully do not pounce. They are the hardest enemy to spot, as they move with standard crowds and are covered in mud that makes them blend into the environment at a glance. Whenever they hit you, it spreads mud across your screen, makes it harder to see. The more hits you take, the less you can see.

Clowns: The terror of children and adults worldwide have been infected! Clowns are very noticeable at a glance thanks to their garish clothing. They wear squeaky shoes which drags all nearby Common Infected behind him. His nose can also be honked if you punch him. It doesn't really do anything, but it's kinda funny! There's an achievement for honking his nose as well as burning him and his followers with a single molotov.

Police Officer: The most irritating Uncommon Infected, these guys are unaffected when shot from the front thanks to their body armor. However, a single punch will send them to the ground, which makes them open to attacks. All attacks to the front are useless except explosives or fire.

Spitter

Appearance: The Spitter is a foul-looking southern woman with sunken breasts and a distended belly. Her proportions are off enough to be genuinely disgusting, as compared to the rest of the Special Infected (besides perhaps the Boomer). She stumbles around and tends to hide her disgusting visage behind objects.

Sounds: The Spitter has sounds that reflect her nature of fighting. In short, she is constantly hawking, coughing up phlegm, and spitting. Her attack noise is extremely easy to distinguish, as it is a veyr loud loogie noise.

Strengths: The Spitter excels at splitting up the group, as her acid patch forces the group to move to a different location. If any members of the group move in a different direction than the others, they are stranded until the acid runs out. The acid is extremely potent, even on normal, and can down players fairly quickly if they do not move right away. This is explained as players taking progressively more damage the longer they are in the patch. When she dies, she drops an acid patch where she died.

Weaknesses: The Spitter has a long delay between spits, which makes her a very easy target. Her acid patch takes a moment to begin hurting the players, which lets observant players avoid it, and there is a delay between the actually spit where she can be stunned or killed. Her spittle is neon green, which makes her incredibly easy to spot, and her sounds are just as prominent as her visuals. In short, the Spitter is a gigantic target.

Special: As mentioned, the Spitter is incredibly effective at splitting up groups, but are not that great on their own. They are most effective against players when they are distracted through a Horde or Tank. The Jockey or Smoker can also help out the Spitter by steering players into the acid patch, hurting them greatly.
