However the highest profile project that Hall and HDFilms is involved in is the recent revival of V. The acclaimed sci-fi mini-series from the 1980's spawned a mini-series sequel and then a short lived regular series before its cancelation. However the original show remains popular today as its vision of aliens coming to Earth with supposedly peaceful intent but hiding some dark secrets still stands up today. V's owner Warner Brothers had tried a number of times to revive the franchise before Hall and HDFilms came in.Hall told us that Warner Brothers had the V franchise open to a revival proposal and that working with his writing partner Jamie O'Brien Moore he helped to develop the "bible" for his vision of the new V universe. "It was much like developing a game, " he told us. "You create the universe first and then develop a story around it." He then presented their V proposal to Warner Brothers who approved it to go forward with production. HDFilms then set out to find someone to actually write the pilot script and launch the new series. They found such a person in Scott Peters, the co-creator of the USA Network sci-fi series The 4400 (which ironically has a few similarities to V)
Hall told us that he is not as involved in the day-to-day production of the V series, saying, "We have the experienced TV creators handling that work." He does get to see every episode and makes notes to give to the production team but will only step in if he feels a script massively deviates from what he feels the show is all about. The results seem to be working well as the TV series revival of V has gotten great reviews and high ratings.
Even though he's not actively in the business of making games anymore, Hall does have some opinions on the current state of the game industry. Hall said that costs for making AAA game titles are going up and as a result he says, "The one thing that's going to have to give is the length of the game." Hall said that the industry will most likely cut development costs by making games that take less time to complete. However he adds that such a move might inspire game developers to be more creative in their decisions.
As far as his own current game obsession, Hall told us that he is "deep into Street Fighter IV. I like to master a game totally before going onto the next one." He's also a huge fan of Blizzard's games so its likely that when StarCraft II is released he will be first in line to buy the full version.
Of course, Hall still has to work for a living and there are a number of other projects that he and HDFilms are working on. In fact he told us during our interview, "I just signed a deal yesterday to revive an existing franchise." While he couldn't give us any details he seemed extremely enthusiastic about the prospect of relaunching yet another well known entertainment franchise, saying, "It's going to totally be the coolest thing ever."
