New to the Mac? Check out TUAW's Mac 101

Mac Monday: Spooky Runes/Boonka

It's time once again for Mac Monday, where we take a look at a couple of games new out for the Mac (and sometimes the PC too). This time around we're checking out Anawiki Games's Spooky Runes, and Sandlot Games's Boonka. One of these games has an atmospheric vibe, and the other is vibrant and goofy. Guess which one and find out after the jump!

Spooky Runes
is a puzzle game ostensibly in the Match 3 category; you're required to match up three or more runes on a board containing a few different types and colors. When you make a match, the runes matched disappear. The goal is to match enough of one color -- doesn't matter which -- to fulfill the level's quota.

Each level's runes are laid out differently, grouped differently, so it's not as simple as just laying down runes. The runes you're given arrive in groups, arranged in different configurations. These configurations might be: two runes on top of each other, or three in a line, or three in an "L" shape, etc., with all colors mixed together. You're given notice of what configuration is to arrive next by way of a graphic in the upper left corner, Tetris-style. Pressing the right mouse button rotates each grouping, allowing different placements for maximum advantage.

Invariably, you'll place a group that will cause a match but leave a few runes behind. If you're not careful, you'll clutter up the board, which can be a problem, as you cannot lay new runes over existing ones.

If you match four or more runes, you'll leave behind a special symbol. This symbol represents a spell. The spell will show up randomly somewhere on the board. To activate it, you'll need to match its color just as you'd match any other. There are different spells -- a fire spell will destroy all runes in a cross pattern above, below, and to both sides of the spell, for example. A vanish spell will remove random runes from the board when activated. Spells can also trigger existing spells on the board if the spell effect contacts that spell.

Later levels introduce the same spells, but as permanent options that can be charged up for use at any time during the level. These spells correspond to particular rune colors. To use a spell takes away from the reserves of that rune color, and therefore moves you farther away from the completion of the level based on that color, but sometimes it's worth using that spell if it allows you to de-clutter an area.

Later, stones are introduced that take the place of runes. These stones can't be matched; they can only be destroyed by the use of spells. And finally, there is a time limit under which the board must be cleared, or you're forced to restart the level. This can only be done a given number of times -- using up a "life" -- but new lives can be had by the accumulation of enough points.

Spooky Runes
is engaging enough to be given a spin. If you're a fan of the Match 3 genre, go check it out.
