More download sites reject Steamworks-supported Modern Warfare 2
While we again point out that Steam-supported games have been sold by IGN's Direct2Drive in the past (Empire: Total War and Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II) it looks like they and the other two sites have all put their finger down in this case to protest having Steam be a requirement for purchasing Modern Warfare 2. We have emaield Valve, Infinity Ward and Activision for comment.

I swear, this is totally a way to get PC users miffed enough to switch platforms. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if console mfg's paid Activision off to turn this whole thing into enough of a fiasco to just tick-off PC players. So now it's only available on Steam, it's only 9 vs. 9 in multiplayer, can't actually be played when you buy it, and it costs the same price as X360 and PS3?
Next they'll tell us it's only available in Hungarian, only sold in Portugal, can't be used with a keyboard, only displays in brown, deletes your computer's wallpaper, hides your taskbar, comes with authentic human feces in the "PC Collector's Edition", offers a free tattoo of an anus to anyone PC user who wants one, and somehow causes deafness, despite the fact it's shipped without sound.Posted at 11:23PM on Nov 8th 2009 by JB

Umm... if Direct2Drive or GamersGate really think that by not carrying the game, they will impact game sales in any way, they're dead wrong. The people who still want this game even after IW crapped on PC gamers numerous times are going to get it no matter. These companies are not market leaders and really don't carry much clout within the community. They can take a stand against Steamworks if they want by not carrying the game but in the end, they are simply forfeiting the money they would have made from MW2.
Anyway, Steamworks is good for consumers. I understand it makes the competition nervous but they need to get used to changes like this or get left in the dust. Steam isn't going anywhere so if they want to compete, they're going to need to build a better mousetrap.
