This mod adds the 'Dead Before Dawn' Campaign to Left 4 Dead. It's inspired by the movie Dawn of the Dead. Installation instructions are shown after the jump.

"The custom campaign Left 4 Dead fans have been clamouring for has finally arrived, bringing Valve's zombie shooter to the Crossroads Mall--the setting for Zack Snyder's zombie movie remake Dawn of the Dead.

Dead Before Dawn contains 5 maps--the sixth, the finale is not included in this beta--for both co-op and versus play. For that complete shopping mall experience, there are hundreds of new props along new music, new voice-overs and randomized special events. "

Be sure to follow the installation instructions below carefully.

CLIENT SIDE (i.e Your own pc)

Extract the Dead Before Dawn folder to Steam/SteamApps/Common/left 4 dead/left4dead/addons

Start up Left 4 Dead, in the main menu open your console and type: snd_rebuildaudiocache

It will seem as if a map is loading, let it load, if it gets stuck on a full loading bar, leave it for 5 minutes before CTRL ALT DEL out of it to close it down

If you dont know how to open the console go to options, keyboard and mouse, and enable developers console. You can now bring the console up by pressing the tilde key (`) which is to the left of the 1 key.

KNOWN BUG - DO THIS TO AVOID IT!

There is a known bug with a soundloop that occurs when setting zombies on fire, open the console and type this: bind g "snd_restart"

Anytime you get the soundloop bug, just tap the G key and it will stop. We apologise for this bug, but its a problem within L4D not the campaign.

SERVER SIDE

Extract the CONTENTS of the folder to /left4dead. Pay attention that you extracted the CONTENTS of the DeadBeforeDawn folder directly into your left4dead folder.

INCORRECT: left4dead/DeadBeforeDawn (There must be NO DeadBeforeDawn folder, only the files and folders inside the DeadBeforeDawn folder)
CORRECT: /left4dead

If you install it to the addons folder on your server, it WILL NOT detect it.

hmm... could they just make a .vpk? This is a GB of info that you have to manually install and the manually rebuild the sound cache! Good Luck, its a beta and full of errors, shouldnt really be here yet.Posted at 9:35AM on Nov 4th 2009 by graphite

If I extract the folders in the zip file to my left4dead folder
wont they overright the folders that I already have on my server?
I have a maps/materieal/missions/models/scripts and sound
folder already on my server... I am confused...

Unpack the entire folder into addons, not just the individual ones. So the path should read "..common/left 4 dead/left4dead/addons/DeadBeforeDawn..."Posted at 9:42AM on Nov 13th 2009 by Steven Wong

When do all the custom sounds kick in? I did the snd_rebuildaudiocache on my local machine and I played some of the sounds in the sound folder. Am I missing something?????

Here is another step in getting your sounds to play...After you have done the snd_rebuildaudiocache,exactly as indicated above... A friend of mine .ACE. found this info and now my sounds work. Befor I could not hear the fellow giving the instructions on how to get through the MOD or any of the other music which by the way ROCKS !!!! Thanks S for the MOD !!!
Start L4D and click EXTRAS then click Add-ons.. Un-check all the ADD-ONS except for DEAD BEFOR DAWN.... Then hit DONE.
That should get your sound working....
