In MMM, there was a Collapse-like minigame that allowed you to upgrade your items, like making the ovens work faster. That hasn't made it to MEM, but in its place is a Hidden Object minigame that functions roughly in the same way. More than that, however, upgrading items and getting new items comes from dealing with the Merchant that appears between levels. Spending gold will get you new items to sell, like chocolate or eggs; new recipes to combine items, like apple jam; new items like another oven; and upgrades to Miriel herself, like greater carrying capacity, or a magical amulet that lets her move more quickly.
As in MMM, MEM has an overarching storyline, but unlike the original, the sequel has no dialogue choices to commit. The demo doesn't give a clear idea of what the storyline actually is, but it involves the collection of items. Presumably, these items will combine to complete the story, but that will have to wait until you buy the full version of the game.

All in all, Miriel's Enchanted Mystery is a great sequel to Miriel the Magical Merchant. It offers more of what made the original so much fun to play, and ups the ante with improvements across the board. You can grab the demo right here on Big Download for both Mac and PC.
