Left 4 Dead Guide: Crashing and Burning

It's the eve of the second entry into the Left 4 Dead franchise, and as a bonus (or perhaps consolation prize) to owners of the original, the campaign Crash Course was released on September 29th. While it is, overall, shorter than your average campaign, it's also tougher and is only comprised of two missions, both of which are extra long. If you don't know how to handle yourself, you can die extremely easily, and then you'll have to restart the level all the way back at the beginning. In case you are struggling, here's a handy-dandy guide to splattering those zombie brains and guts all over the alleyway walls.

Crash Course begins where No Mercy leaves off. Your helicopter has crashed because the pilot met an untimely demise. Specifically, he began to turn and he was shot. You start off in the middle of a parking lot and must make your way to a local truck stop, where a massive Killdozer-esque truck is waiting to be your carriage to safe haven. Functionally, this makes the game resemble the fourth section or Death Toll and initial section of No Mercy greatly. The entire campaign is like this, so one alleyway might end up looking like another, and getting lost can definitely hurt your chances.

General things to know

  • This campaign is much less forgiving than the other four in terms of weapon and item placement. You must rely much more on smart movements, weaving in and out of buildings, and pick-ups such as gas tanks and propane cans.
  • Pipe bombs are your best friend here, as enemies are in every nook and cranny. It is recommended that you throw at least one pipe bomb per major area, and save the Molotovs for the Horde. You can bypass this by making use of the buildings, where the Infected are bunched much closer together.
  • Cars are everywhere in this campaign, and a few of them have alarms on. Watch your fire. This also makes this the worst campaign to fight a Tank in, unfortunately. Nothing like cars hurtling into your face at a constant pace.
  • Thanks to the abundance of windows and doors in every inside area, buildings are a temporary refuge at best. Keep moving as quickly as possible, and watch for Smokers. They can snag a teammate and get away before you have a chance to track them down.
Stage 1: The Alley

Walkthrough
: Ready for some pain? Of course you are. Starting at the crash site of the helicopter, you weave your way in and out of buildings, around cars, and under highways as you head towards the truck depot. Along the way, you are faced with a Horde moment through the use of the Howitzer, which must be used to blow a path over the bridge. After you run over the bridge, you drop down into the safe room inside a warehouse. By the way, this level is about twice as long as your normal level.

Horde Choke Points
  • Inside any building, but especially in those with only two entrances. Make sure you know where the closest building is, because you will be ducking into them a lot. The level is so long that you will be facing a lot of Hordes. Beware buildings with skylights, as they are not safe at all, thanks to Smokers.
  • On top of vehicles. There are few that allow you to get up, but they always offer you that much needed breather to blast a zombie in the face as it climbs up into the truck bed.
Tips and Tricks
  • Weapon spawns in this part are much more randomized than in other campaigns. Not only that, but the better weapons, such as the assault rifle or automatic shotgun, often only appear by themselves. This makes gathering a good selection of weaponry a scavenge job, not a simple luck-out.
  • Grenades and destructible objects such as gas cans are everywhere. Gas cans are notably useful in this campaign, so make sure to use them well.
  • Tanks often get confused in the geometry rich environment here. Use this to your advantage. Rather than trying to kill them, just light them on fire and let them die off as you run around. Make sure to use walls and such as good cover against rocks and thrown cars.

Stage 2: Truck Depot Finale

Walkthrough: Upon exiting, you must wind your way through more back alleys and buildings on your way to the truck depot, making this finale much like the first stage. Once you reach the end, you must power up the generator to charge the beast of a truck, fighting off wave after wave of baddies before finally escaping.

Horde Choke Points
  • Same as the previosu stage in regards to smart use of buildings as cover and choke points. Same goes for a few vehicles, such as the destroyed truck that leads to the depot.
  • Containers. There are a few open shipping containers that offer great choke points for oncoming Hordes. One particular choke point almost always has the second-tier weapons inside, allowing players to forego reloading in favor of just picking up a new weapon.
Tips and Tricks
  • Once again, weapons are semi-random and often not all together. Grenades are also plentiful, although pipe bombs are usually in short supply. Gas cans are also, once again, very important, although the large amount of Molotovs alleviates this.
  • If the tank is encountered right before the finale, he can easily be lead around thanks to the amount of stuff lying about. Once again, just light him on fire and flee.
  • The finale offers several places to hide out, as opposed to the few of the previous campaigns. These include a closet, a fortified bus, on a roof near the power generator, or next to a minigun. These are all viable, defensible areas for those wanting to have a different experience each time.
  • Those looking for an easy win can climb into the corner with the light inside the garage and simply bash everything. This makes the finale much easier, but takes much more time, especially in regards to getting the generator back online. Naturally, disperse when the tank approaches.
