Left 4 Dead Crash Course Quick Impressions

It's really hard to complain about getting some new content for free for one of the best PC games released in the last few years. So we won't be doing that here. The just released new mini-campaign Crash Course represents the first major content update for Valve's zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead since last April's Survival Pack (which added the Survival Mode and one all new map). For Crash Course, Valve made an all new two level campaign for single and co-op play and those maps can also be used in Survival and Versus mode. It's the first time Valve has released a new official campaign since the title shipped to stores back in 2008.

Check out the jump for our impressions:
The two levels are pretty unremarkable in terms of art design. The first level starts our with our four heroes-zombie killers finding themselves on the ground after the helicopter that took them out of harm's way at the end of the No Mercy campaign crashes and puts them right back in harm's way.

The two levels are constructed much like the rest of Left 4 Dead's maps. Both take place in a warehouse district with lots of crashed cars, buses and trucks all over the place. The first level has you and your three amigos scurrying through the wreckage and as always you have to be care of the swarms of regular zombies and the special boss types as well. At one point you find yourself trying to cross a bridge. You have to fire a stationary howitzer to clear a path on the bridge but naturally this means dealing with a larger-than normal swarm of the undead. After crossing the bridge you get to your safe zone which is filled with lots of entertaining writing on the walls.

The second and final level has you going through some more of the warehouse district until you get to your final destination. It's a truck repair shop where you have to start up a generator to keep the lights going until you get rescued. Again, the zombies are going to swarm you to make sure your team doesn't have a happy ending. If you make it, a armored rescue vehicle shows up that takes your team out.

There are 10 new achievements in the new Crash Course campaign and there's even a few new voice acting lines from the characters. However, Valve has made it a point to say that the new maps are primarily to bring a faster Versus mode to the game. How you feel about this depend on if you feel the current Versus rounds are too long or just right. In any case these new maps are being designed to give players a way to play the mode in 30 minutes or so.

Overall the new maps in Crash Course are well designed even if the visual look is a bit on the bland side. Again it's hard to compaign about something PC gamers get to play for free and with Valve lowering the price for Left 4 Dead yet again for the next three days to just $14.99 you would be hard pressed to not get the game now if you haven't already.
