The role-playing and first-person genres have been intermingling for a while now, with games like BioShock and Deus Ex blurring the line between traditional RPGs and traditional shooters. Gearbox is taking this just one step further with Borderlands, a shooter that aims to incorporate all of the things we love about shooting games while maintaining a style of play similar to hack-'n-slash classics like Diablo and Dungeon Siege. It smacks of so many different elements that it serves as an interesting entry point into the history of its inspirations and spiritual successors. We do love history. Especially histories involving some of the best games of all time.
