NPD wants to launch digital download games sales chart

We all know that the PC game industry is transitioning slowly from a brick-and-mortar retail store model to a digital download business approach. Yet there's been little concrete info on exactly where and how much revenue comes from digital downloads of games. Now the NPD Group says it is wants to launch its own downloadable games sales chart.

According to MCV, the NPD Group wants to stop the misinformation about how the digital download business works. NPD's David Riley is quoted as saying, " . . . accurate tracking will provide a no-nonsense view of what's happening on the publisher level, keeping away from the spin, and in some cases, misleading information that often appears on the internet." Our question is exactly how The NPD Group will gather this info. Digital download sites like Steam, Direct2Drive and other outlets have been nortorious for only giving up very vague indications on how well games sell on their systems.
