Unreal Tournament 3 free play weekend on Steam begins tomorrow

Epic Games has decided to give folks yet another chance to sample their 2007 first person shooter Unreal Tournament 3 for free beginning tomorow on Steam. Folks can download and play the complete version of the game for free until the end of the weekend. In addition the game will also go on sale for 60 percent off its normal Steam price until September 27.

Epic Games will also put the Unreal Deal Pack on sale for 60 percent off during the same time period and the original Unreal Tournament game will be on sale for a mere $1.99 during the sales period. This Thursday marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the demo for Unreal Tournament.

And now, my imitation of James Murff, from an article (HA!) he "wrote" earlier today about Section 8:

"Undoubtedly, Unreal Tournament 3 will contain Steam online and thus screw over the social gamer contingent. It sucks to be pessimistic like this, but you can almost count on any game being released on a console as well as PC as having two things: limited to no LAN gameplay, and Steam online. It's a disturbing trend in recent games that really hurts the LAN-based play that a lot of gamers grew up with. Move away from the online model and back towards the physical one. There's a reason why games like Starcraft ONE and 1999's Unreal Tournament are in the annals of LAN history."

See James, your words come back to haunt you. Because what you tried to pin on GFWL today I now pin on Steam. Child's play too - you see, I know your writing is a joke, which is why I created this parody. I want you to see how STUPID your article from earlier today really is.

Oh, by the way, Unreal will get a slight spike this weekend, nothing more. Because this week saw the release of Batman, RE5, and Red Faction Guerrilla, and they all use GFWL. So if you want to go backwards in your gaming, then this IS the way to go. And do not forget to complain about UT3 not having cross platform play with its PS3 counterpart either. They share level data, but GFWL still is the only brand that has pulled off TRUE cross platform gaming.

And yet, GFWL's cross-platform play was terrible at the time it was introduced (Shadowrun) and is still terrible. So it's not exactly a big loss if other games do not support it. In fact, I'd consider that a bonus, since it meant the developers didn't waste their time.

PC vs PC, regardless of sub-PC platform used (GFWL, Steam, Impulse), will always be preferable to having PC vs Console. Honestly, cross-platform play is completely superfluous, and developers should focus more on making their PC game better than trying to link it to consoles.

I wouldn't buy it, unless for the mods. Their are some good mods finally coming out, and that is the only reason I have it. No one plays it, except for a very select few. I prefer UT2K4, as UT3 seems sluggish and just not what the Unreal universe should be.
