At PAX 2009 this weekend we got to see yet another APB video presentation behind closed doors. While not actual live gameplay it was a 15 minute video of real gameplay that was recently created. Oddly enough one of the participants who controlled one of the characters in the APB video was none other than Mark Rein, the VP of Epic Games (APB uses Epic's Unreal Engine 3)
Check out more info from the game after the jump:
The 15 minute video showed off the basics of combat in APB as Rein and a Real Time Worlds employee teamed up as part of the game's "Enforcers"; the sort of mercenary types who try to bring down the criminal element in APB's fictional city. APB is priding itself on the fact that the game is all about online players going after other online players.
In the video we got to see Enforcers and Criminals battle against each other for control of various points in the city. While you can choose to shoot your enemies as an Enforcer you can also put the cuffs on criminals to arrest them instead. Overall the gameplay is typical shooter stuff but there are some variations. For example some vehicles in the game handle better and/or differently than others which at least makes driving in the game more interesting.
Overall our first real look at gameplay from APB (even from a pre-taped video) was promising. The game certainly looks good and the customization options that we saw at E3 are extensive. The big question is whether the shooter-style of gameplay will attract people to an MMO title. APB has already said that they will not require a monthly fee to play APB and that may be a wise move to get people interested in checking the game out. APB is still scheduled for a first quarter 2010 release for the PC, a time period that's already getting more and more crowded it seems.
