PAX 2009: DeathSpank eyes-on impressions

It's been a long time in coming but Hothead Games' first totally original game DeathSpank got a big reveal at PAX 2009 this weekend. The game, from the mind of former LucasArts adventure game god Ron Gilbert, has live demos at Hothead's PAX booth and Big Download was there to see them and to chat with Hothead team members

The game certainly has the humor that was a big part of Gilbert's LucasArts work on the first two Monkey Island games. DeathSpank, however, isn't an adventure game per se (although there will be some puzzles to solve). Rather it's an action-RPG in the veil of the Diablo series but with a unique art style and, naturally, lots of funny stuff.

The PAX 2009 demo of DeathSpank showed the lead character in full form. He's a parody of the typical fantasy hero. He's big, he likes to kill things and he's pretty full of himself. A lot of the humor comes in the conversations he has with some of the NPCs in the game. An early exchange between DeathSpank and a retired fantasy hero has that particular hero go though some of his older aliases, which apparently included some time as a woman. Kinky.

While the game has a lot of the funny about it, DeathSpank ultimately a brutal action-RPG as players control the title character to take out any and all comers. From chicken to rock monsters, our main man has to take out a variety of enemies in a variety of ways; from his always handy sword to more ranged weapons. We've been told by Hothead that there will ultimately be over 100 weapons in the game to use.

While you are gaining experience and gathering loot in DeathSpank you are also checking out the excellent level design and especially the mix of 2D and 3D cartoon-style graphics. While some recent games with a cel-shaded look are all 3D, DeathSpank has characters that are fully 3D but some of the level's environments (trees, buildings and more) appear to be made of flat paper. It definitely gives the game a unique look.

Hothead Games says that players can expect the game to take about 20 hours to complete the main storyline (previously announced plans for the game to be episodic have apparently been scrapped). At the moment Hothead isn't talking about specific platforms but it's pretty certain that one of those platforms will be the PC since the PAX 2009 demo was running on one. As they mention themselves, Hothead expects the game to be released in "2010-ish". In the meantime if you want to have DeathSpank help you out, you can call Hothead's direct line to the main man at 1-866-631-1574.
