BlizzCon 2009: StarCraft II Lore (a.k.a. voice actor) panel

As we reported earlier, today's BlizzCon's so-called "StarCraft II Lore panel" was actually a StarCraft II voice actor panel, where it was revealed that Tricia Helfer will voice Sarah Kerrigan in the sequel. Robert Clotworthy was also on the panel talking about returning to the role of Jim Raynor after voicing the role in the original StarCraft over 10 years ago. Chris Metzen, Blizzard's VP of creative development, moderated the panel.

Other actors on the panel include Fred Tatasciore, a veteran voice actor who plays two roles in StarCraft II (Zeratul and Swann). Next on the voice actor panel was Neil Kaplan, the gravely voice behind Tychus Findlay in the game. Dave Fennoy was up next; he plays the new character role of Gabriel Tosh. Finally James Harper, a veteran of the original game, returns for StarCraft II in the role of Arcturus Meigsk. As we previously reported, well known Warner Bros. Animation voice director Andrea Romano has those duties for StarCraft II

Helfer admitted in the panel to being a "video game virgin" in terms of playing games so it can be hard to come into a role without knowing the entire history of StarCraft. She was grateful for Blizzard's Chris Metzen and Romano who were able to help her get the back story on both the game universe and on Kerrigan.

She did say that while she's a nice person in real life Helfer does seem to gravitate to roles that have some sort of evil streak. Her role is fairly small for the first game installment (Wings of Liberty) but look for Kerrigan to have larger roles in the other two planned expansion packs.

James Harper admitted that he did voice work on the original game but hasn't actually played the game itself. In fact he has an unopened PC version of the first StarCraft game. Metzen jokingly suggested that Harper look into selling that rare unopened copy on eBay.

Metzen admitted during the pane's Q&A session that he has voiced a few small roles in the original StarCraft and World of Warcraft. He also said that because of the plans for the two expansion packs that the voice work for the game and expansions. will take years to actually complete.
