Tim Sweeney: No new Unreal Tournament game for several years
Sweeney states, "Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we're planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years. So we have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives." He did add that Epic plans to continue to support the creation of third party mods for the game. In fact Sweeney says they will announce plans sometime in the future to " . . . open up the engine to more people to use freely and use cool stuff."

Oh well. Opening the engine up more to the mod community sounds great, though. There are some great mods for UT3 such as The Haunted.

I think ultimately giving UT a rest is a good thing. While UT3 wasn't a bad game, it felt extremely lazy in terms of what it offered. I think my only real fear is that by the time it returns, it'll be announced as a console-only game.Posted at 2:56AM on Jul 24th 2009 by ChimpWithAHandgun
@ahac: I actually liked that idea for the UT series, better than that hokey story they tried to add on to UT3. If they would have made annual updates or expansions, that might have been an interesting way to take the series.
I would agree though, that a new non-tournament Unreal game would be welcome.Posted at 10:27AM on Jul 24th 2009 by ChimpWithAHandgun
*cries* epic just broke my heart, no new unreal but i bet like 3 more shitty gears of wars come out T_TPosted at 3:35PM on Jul 24th 2009 by soapgoat
You're all being far too polite. Let's just state it as it is, UT3 was a bad game. Its adoption was terrible, there were very few people playing it even on the free weekends that Steam provided. It offered nothing new, it removed what the previous UT had added, the modes that it did have were boring and dated, the bots were dumber than dirt, and as someone else mentioned it was just all around lazy.
We basically bought a technology presentation.
I'm not surprised that Epic isn't going to make another one any time soon. It would be hard to justify it and I doubt that many would buy it; fewer than those who bought UT3, certainly.Posted at 12:56PM on Jul 25th 2009 by ChongShin
Well of course they arent working on another UT game, they are still working on the linux port of UT3.
Apparently...
I assume all their UT team resources are tied up with that.
I was gonna buy UT3 but me most people I know who were gonna get it are still waiting for the linux version to come out first.
They f**ked themSELVES over with that one.Posted at 7:56PM on Sep 12th 2009 by kickback999
