Last month at E3, developer Riot Games announced plans to release their online fantasy action-RTS game League of Legends via download and retail stores in September. Today the company announced a change in their business strategy for the game, turning it into the latest free-to-play PC game.
While the core game can now be played for free, the title will make use of Riot Points that can be bought with real money. Players can use Riot Points to spend on more visual customization items. However the developer adds, "Gamers who spend money in the game will not have a power advantage over other players."
While the game will be free to play, Riot Games still plans to release a retail version of League of Legends when it launches in September, The $29.99 Collector's Pack will include some exclusive in-game items such as some unique skins for some of the game's Champions along with $10 in Riot Funds. Riot Games also plans to add onto the game post release wiith "new features, Champions, maps and additional content as suggested by the community."

They just got one extra player, at least for a while.
Wasn't planning on buying it, but you can't go wrong with free and I enjoyed the little bit of DotA that I played.Posted at 9:56PM on Jul 14th 2009 by Xeones25
