ArmA II heads to US retail stores July 7; 2 GB demo soon
Meanwhile a post on the Bohemia Interactive message boards has announced that we can expect an ArmA II demo to be released sometime later this week. There's no word yet on what the content will be like but brace yourself for a big file; the final demo is expected to be about 2 GB in size.

Not smaller, it's 10gb.. AA3 is 4.08gb. I agree about the bugs, though ArmA isn't a spring chicken when it comes to releases chalked full of bugs.
For the most part they don't affect gameplay like the swamped AA3 authentication server problem does. What I learned is there's up to a 4h delay between training missions appearing in your jacket. On a system capable of playing ArmA2 you should at least now since they released a big 250mb patch be able to play it, albeit annoyingly with a delay which prevents you from entering real action.
I am only short my medic credential now. Ironic that ArmA2 is about American soldiers but now has been delayed to the 16th of July for release in NA, but if you are willing to pay the postage you can find it on Amazon UK or have a friend in the EU ship it to you.
I hope the Steam release is actually updated, unlike ArmA: CO which still languishes at 1.08. The workaround clearly is/was to find a copy of ArmA (US or EU/GB) and strip out your legal hashed cd key from the registry. I documented this on the Steam forum for the game.
Also note the DRM has changed, at least for the retail version, and you may have problems with DICE in the future if BI doesn't keep pace with updating the component... the DRM degrades user experience much like Windows and depends on a good condition DVD.
Over time perhaps BI will do as they did before with the 1.14 patch and remove the CD requirement, but then again I can't see how they would supplicant the necessity for copy protection if they removed DICE, which again requires a real disc, something that is prone to degrade itself, especially with high speed readers.
ArmA2 is surely to be a great experience, but as before is not for the faint of heart, as the complex environment, team-oriented gameplay is compounded by a seemingly confusing boatload of controls.
TrackIR support (Which existed in ArmA) is neat, and I hope the price of these devices becomes more palatable.
On a final note, this game is worth the purchase regardless, for it has retained modding potential and already has to date just in a short time received independent modifications from the community. Check out ArmAHolic if you are interested in supplementing features presumably removed and those foreseen instances where objectively features have been balanced incorrectly.
A.C.E is already in some shape been duplicated and bundled in BI fashion with ArmA2, but there are surely things the community could do better.
Some good tips for performance are: turn down shading, anisotropic, anti-aliasing and view distance if you have unstable framerate.Posted at 12:21PM on Jun 24th 2009 by James Cornell
