DC Universe Online is an upcoming action MMO game in development by SOE under the direction of famous comic book artist, Jim Lee. In it, players will be able to create superpowered characters to fight alongside some of their favorite super heroes, including Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. You'll even get chance to join the Justice League by building up a crime fighting reputation. Alternatively, players can choose to indulge their darker halves and become super villains looking for the big score that'll earn you a place in the Secret Society of Super Villains.

The game is developed to run on both the PC and PlayStation 3. Although there hasn't been an official announcement regarding cross-platform interaction among players, the presentation at E3 2009 was set up to support it.
When creating a character, players need to fill in three different categories, the first being whether the powers are based on things like earth, electricity or light. Second, players must select a power source, which defines how abilities are manifested, like how Green Lantern's ring lets him use Light powers. Lastly, there's how characters get around environments, with abilities like flight, super speed or acrobatics to choose from.
At the presentation, we shown an incident at Star Labs, where an experiment has gone awry, and a virus is unleashed that turns all the researchers into mutants. As a hero, you'll rush into Star Labs to battle alongside Superman and Green Arrow to get control of the situation. At the same time, The Society wants to break in and steal the virus for themselves.

Once the mission is completed, we leave the instanced Star Lab area to a public zone where a group of villain players are already locked in battle with other heroes. While what we experienced was mostly in a battle arena format, we were told that there would be objective based PvP included in the game, where hero and villain goals work against each other. For example, it could be a hero's job to escort and protect a transport and a villain's role to rob it. However, we were assured that people who don't enjoy PvP will have plenty of PvE content to enjoy.
There's still no official word on when comic book fans can expect DC Universe Online to enter into beta, but things are shaping up very well for this fast paced MMO.
