Wolfenstein 3D first came out in 1992 and pretty much set the standard for first-person shooters for its time. The series has seen a number of installments since then, with the latest developed by Raven Software, simply called Wolfenstein. Raven is looking to capture the key points that make the series stand out, meaning that B.J. Blazkowicz will being far behind enemy lines to single-handedly take on an army of Nazis seeking to harness the powers of the paranormal.

In this case, the Nazis are on the verge of obtaining something called the Black Sun, which works as an infinite source of energy. Blazkowicz stumbles upon an amulet that's connected to the Black Sun's supernatural energies - something he discovers when it protects him from incoming bullets shortly before vaporizing a group of enemy soldiers. He later uses the amulet as a belt buckle to access different abilities as he needs them. Powers include an energy shield while Mire slows down time and Veil allows him to peer into an alternate world to see things that would otherwise be invisible - such as creatures hiding in the veil and secret passageways.
Unfortunately, Blazkowicz can't rely completely on supernatural abilities, since Nazi researchers found a way to inhibit them using strategically placed generators. This is where his talents in using plain old firepower to destroy everything come in handy. Environments will shift into black and white whenever powers are inhibited, providing a very clear sign when the supernatural isn't on the player's side and return to color once the inhibitors are destroyed.
Apart from the usual Nazis, Blazkowicz will face a myriad of different enemies. Chief among them are the soldiers empowered by the Black Sun's energies. Others are were produced as accidents while experimenting with Black Sun. Even more threatening are creatures that come from beyond the veil itself and wield powers of their own. Fortunately, with a little exploration, players will gain access to an arsenal of experimental heavy weapons to deal with it all.
Scheduled to release on August 4th, Wolfenstein marks the return of a classic with completely off-the-wall action for players to dive into through the veil.
