Left 4 Dead Guide: Survival of the Fittest

With the new patch, Valve has added a brand new game mode to Left 4 Dead. Let's take a look at the other ways to play first, however. First in the modes is Campaign, which tasks four friends to push their way through hordes of crazy infected on a path to true escape. Second is Versus, which pits four survivors against four special infected in a competitive form of Campaign. Finally comes the new mode, Survival, which is like Campaign mode... sort of. Think the finale of each campaign mode. Now imagine that finale if it were 10 times bigger and badder, and you had no way to escape. Only death lies ahead. Think you have what it takes? If not, no worries, as here's a handy-dandy guide for you!
As a rule, any and all tactics that you do in Campaign and Versus can and will apply to Survival mode. However, there are a lot of tweaks necessary to cope with the stress of constant horde attacks. Therefore, use the previous guides and your own experience as a base when coming up with your new strategies.

  • Before starting your defense, you need to find the area that you want to defend. Keep in mind that this is a non-stop finale, and that the only escape is death. You want somewhere easily defended (to kill the normal infected) as well as a place with fast exits (to escape tanks), narrow kill zones (to eliminate special infected before they reach you), and easy access to supplies. It's a careful balance of factors, as leaning too far in a particular direction can be costly for the entire team. The most easily defended area
  • Exploding items such as propane tanks and gas cans take on a whole new importance in Survival mode. These gunfire-triggered items can extend the lives of your team members significantly, and must be used intelligently in order to maximize the time given. There are two schools of thought regarding these boons of explosive potential: lay them all out before the match, or keep them with you and use them as grenades. The position you choose will color your decision greatly, but know that these items are the most crucial part of your defense.
  • Molotov cocktails and gas cans are your best friend in Survival, even more so than pipe bombs or propane tanks. The reason why is that the fire will continue to burn after the initial explosion, setting up area denial in that location for any infected. Place cans and use molotovs at the most crucial of choke points for maximum effect. Also, note that fire is a great way to kill the Tank, if ou can afford to move around.
  • Given the constant stream of enemies, the weapons take on a new urgency in their use. As such, certain weapons are better than others. In particular, the auto shotgun is the best weapon, as it has a wide spread, high damage, and high ammo-used-to-bodies-made ratio. The assault rifle and sniper rifle are less important and, in some cases, completely interchangable. The main difference is that the assault rifle is good for medium- to close-range targets, while the sniper rifle is perfect for long-range targets such as a troublesome Smoker. In short, most of your team should be packing shotguns.
  • For maximum life gained, wait until the last possible moment to use a health pack on yourself or a teammate. Instead, use pain pills. Use lots of pain pills. These pills will help you extend the time spent by letting you patch up later. When stocking up on supplies, never forget your supply of pills. They are a true life-saver, after all.

Next are some tips for the new map in Survival mode! As we can't exactly cover every map in Left 4 Dead (or can we?), here's the guide for this single map. Hopefully our strategies will give you a good idea of what to do for the others! Also, as always, nothing beats a strategy that fits your team and your personality, so get creative! Don't follow the guide literally.

  • The top of the lighthouse is a great place to camp for the common infected attacks as well as Hunter and Boomer hits, but keep in mind that the Hunter pounce is upgraded to knock nearby players back. It also has two other problems that prevent it from being the perfect place: Smokers and Tanks. A Smoker can drag you off the lighthouse with no effort at all, and if the Tank hits you while up there, you will die. Period. You will get flung across the map and will die from the fall. Therefore, keep only one or two members up there, potentially with a rifle for some sniping. It will be their job to hurl grenades at infected around the map as well as act as the initial Tank lure.
  • Another good place to defend is the storeroom area. There are plenty of items hidden inside, and it is extremely easy to bottleneck the infected on their way through. The downside is that when the Tank comes, you will be trapped. You either need to all carry serious firepower (to down the Tank or obstructing infected) or focus on an escape route when the Tank shows up.
  • The two main supply areas are the aforementioned storeroom and immediately near the spawn. If people need to rearm, help them get to the areas and back into position as a team. If you are divided, you will fall. You do not want to be divided as a team. Ever. A good way to cover a rearm is a simple pipe bomb to lure the infected away, so one person should at least have a pipe bomb.
  • The lulls in-between waves will allow you just enough time to move around and possibly restock on ammo and goodies if you are careful. Keep in mind that the infected always come from the woods, so keep close to the lighthouse. It will let you take cover immediately as well as get supporting fire from your teammates.
