We Love The 90s (for PC Games) : 1990-1991

PC gaming has been around since, well, PCs have existed. However the platform always seemed to get the short end of the attention stick compared to console game titles (with a few exceptions). That all changed in the 1990s as PC gaming entered a new golden age. With developments like shareware titles, CD-Rom games, Internet-based titles, Windows 95 and more powerful PCs, quite a few titles got a ton of attention and sales.

In this new multi-part feature we look back at that glorious decade of the 1990s as we focus on just some of the games that we loved to play (and in some cases still play) from that decade. Today we look back at a few of our favorite titles from 1990 and 1991:

One of the best things about PC gaming is that we can still play these old games on our current systems. 100% backwards compatible =)Posted at 7:12PM on Apr 20th 2009 by Sokkratez

Well, it's not quite like that. Newer Windows version are not really that compatible with old games. To play those old games like they were intended (full sound, right speed, etc.) you need a DOS emulator such as DOSBox or a specialized game engine like ScummVM, in the same way people who used to play old console games can now play them using the appropriate emulator for their system of choice.

So both PC and console gamers need to use emulators to play old games.

WinXP was able to easily play Phantasie III (1984), Bard's Tale 1 (1986) and Might and Magic (1986?) for me. Granted, action oriented titles needed a slow down utility, but they'd need a slowdown utility with 4mb of RAM equipped 486 DOS machines just as well.

Vista on the other hand, has troubles playing Vista-compatible games. Forget XP or older Windows programs, or DOS. I have better luck with running Windows programs in Linux than Vista. Posted at 6:57PM on Apr 26th 2009 by Azrael
