Feature: Hands-on with Battlefield Heroes

In the past year or so the free-to-play shooter genre has grown quite a bit. A number of games are already out (War Rock, Combat Arms and as of today Cross Fire) and more are in the works (Parabellum, Huxley). Earlier this year id Software launched Quake Live, a modified version of Quake III Arena that allows anyone to play the game (both online against humans and against bots) for free.

Perhaps the most talked about new entry in this suddenly popular genre is Battlefield Heroes. Officially announced back in January 2008, the third person game takes the Battlefield style of gameplay (outdoor levels, character classes and vehicles) and puts it in a smaller package for easy browser-based gameplay. Developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts have been in a closed beta test for some time on the game but today they allowed Big Download to play and then write about what we have experienced in our own play tests.
On the surface, Battlefield Heroes' gameplay is little changed from DICE's previous Battlefield titles. But certainly the game's presentation is much different. DICE decided to use the cartoon-style art that Valve made famous on Team Fortress 2. This will likely make the game appeal to a larger and more mainstream audience than the more hardcore Battlefield games. While technically Battlefield Heroes is a WWII shooter, it's as if the war was reimagined by Warner Bros.' animators. There's no overt nod to real life battles in the game and the two sides are called the National Army and the Royal Army. No Axis or Allies here; it's all very sanitized for your protection (one assumes).

Before you jump into the game itself you pick a hero (you can currently store up to four separate heroes for each Battlefield Heroes account). Each side has three classes: The Soldier is your all around basic infantry may with machine guns and shotguns along . The Gunner is the heavy duty warrior equipped with anti-tank weapons. The Commando is the swift sniper class with low health. Each class has some special abilities that can be activate; for example the Commando can do a Predator-style cloak effect around him.

Once you pick your character class you can then alter his facial appearance (different skin, hair, facial hair and so on). From there it's time to actually play the game itself. There is a tutorial but experienced Battlefield players will have no trouble at all just jumping into a match. One nice thing is that the game senses your characters experience and skill levels and picks a match with players best suited to your level.
