Role-playing elements have gradually become more and more prevalent in first-person shooters as years have passed. Things such as skills that determine player effectiveness, inventories to manage, and perks that offer players new abilities have all been introduced and incorporated into the general first-person shooter mentality. This merger of genres, however, only began with vigor around a decade ago with the release of System Shock 2. Shortly after System Shock 2's release came Deus Ex, which blew away players with a twisting, conspiracy-laden plot, heavy gunplay, and new role-playing elements. A critical and commercial success, Deus Ex paved the way for other games of its kind, and still holds up today as an amazing example of what can happen when designers push the medium forward.
