Rumor: Cryptic to pitch Champions Online to City of Heroes customers?
When you have a super hero MMO that's already well established, it's natural to think that the developers of another upcoming super hero MMO might want to see if players from the established game would like to try their up-and-comer out. However it's another thing entirely if said developer of the up-and-coming game is actively recruiting players from the established MMO via in-game messages and forum posts.
According to a post at f13.net, that's exactly what they claim Cryptic Studios is doing. The original developers of City of Heroes are accused of using such methods to get players of the game (now owned and operated by NCsoft) to beta test Cryptic's Champions Online. Our sister site Massively said they have asked Cryptic for comment but so far there's been no response. This kind of behavior is considered to be unprofessional and would certainly put Cryptic's solid reputation at risk if it is proven to be true.

Ugh. I hate the web 2.0 marketing techniques. If they had just come right out and said "Provide us with your CoH forum username, and we will give you beta access."* On a press release, I would have no problem with that. A little underhanded, but not really deceptive towards the user. Of course, there is probably some legal issues there...
