Wow. I generally liked 20-11, but it must have been difficult to pick the top 10. Personally, Ultima and the Sims would have been closer to 10, and Half Life closer to 3.
I see Wold-3D as launching the FPS era, then Quake revolutionizing it. Half-Life took it to a different realm entirely, and spurred the other titles you mentioned earlier on. My top 5 would most likely be:
1. Wolf 3D
2. Quake
3. Half Life
4. C&C
5. Star-Craft (slash WarCraft)
Granted, these aren't my favorites, per se, but the ones that moved the biggest industry mountains.Posted at 4:47PM on Feb 5th 2009 by Xerloq
Zork--influenced all adventure games like Myst
Bards Tale--All rpgs and FPS, to a point
Ultima---RPG
Wasteland RGPs, and others like Fallout
Elite all 3D space games
Kings Quest, RPG/Adventure
Old school D&D (Azure Bonds) RPG
Lemmings Strategy
Neuromancer, RPG/Adventure
Wizardry RPG

What about Bejewled? Hard to argue that it hasn't helped create some rather massive growth in the PC gaming market and influenced dozens (if not hundreds) of other games, as others try to capture some of its success and addictiveness.
A lot of good memories in number 4's list above. I agree that Zork certainly should be on the list (or even Colossal Cave Adventure, though I think Zork was probably more influential due to its greater spread).
In general though, there was an awful lot of credit given to First Person Shooters here. By my count, you figure that 8, or 7 if you don't count System Shock, of the 20 most influential PC games of all time all come out of the same genre (or associated sub genres). Color me a bit skeptical on such a claim.Posted at 2:29AM on Feb 9th 2009 by Courtney
You can add WoW and everquest to that list, but you can't add Asheron's Call or Asheron's Call 2 to that list even though, most of not all games got most of their features from both of these? Pathetic.Posted at 6:49AM on Feb 9th 2009 by lala
I agree. There are obviously too many FPS games in this top 20 list. Some of them are just mods of the original game, it's quite pointless to add those on a list. Lack of objectiveness, I would say. Where are flight simulators, racing simulators? Some genres are left outside completely.Posted at 10:30AM on Feb 16th 2009 by paulo79

For the most part IMO you have the correct games but a bit out of order. The only glaring abnormality would be GTA3, as that was first a PS2 game (and probably played a bit better on it as well).
I would have put Half-Life in the second spot over the Sims. This is because Half-Life was more revolutionary. Sure the Sims changed the casual market, but Half-Life changed video game storytelling completely. Also the Sim's expansion fever makes it a bit less enthralling (since there are around 35-40 titles + expansions relating to the Sims).
My top 10 would be: (1-10)
DooM
Half-Life
Diablo/DII
WoW (or Everquest/Ultima)
C&C: RA
Civ
Quake
Myst
Counter-Strike
Baldur's Gate (or Neverwinter Nights) Posted at 4:37PM on Feb 5th 2009 by Sonic
