Welcome Big Download's Virtual Bargain Bin, the cure for your weekend gaming woes. This week's pick: Dawn of War: Soulstorm, a $7.50 bargain that includes the Dawn of War II Multiplayer Beta.
Dawn of War: Soulstorm
Price: $7.50
Contents: Dawn of War: Soulstorm, Dawn of War II Multiplayer Beta
Availability: Steam
Many have joked that the release of Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft II might single-handedly save our economy. The anticipation for Blizzard's long-awaited RTS sequel to its 1998 hit has escalated since its official unveiling in spring of 2007, but objective fans realize that the first installment of StarCraft II isn't due until at least late 2009.
As much as fans are clamoring for another three-way dance between Terran, Zerg and Protoss, they've still got some waiting to do. The focus at present is on developer Relic Entertainment's Dawn of War II, which is due for release in February. That's an infinitely more attractive release date than "when it's done," especially since RTS gamers are able to sample the goodness of the sequel, which has been just as anticipated in some circles as StarCraft II.
Valve's Steam digital distribution service is offering instant action to the Dawn of War II Multiplayer Beta for anyone who buys Dawn of War: Soulstorm, the third and final expansion pack for the original Dawn of War. The cost of admission? A mere $7.50, which is a 75 percent reduction from the normal price of $29.99. The best part of the deal--besides the aforementioned beta access--is that Soulstorm is a standalone expansion. For those who missed out on Dawn of War but have heard good things about the upcoming sequel, your $7.50 won't go to waste on an expansion that requires a core game that you don't own.
Forgoing the expected additions of a few new units per faction that most RTS expansion packs brag about, Soulstorm adds two entirely new armies, raising the total amount of playable factions to nine. Not to leave the other armies out of the action, the former seven have received new units, largely comprised of air units for players who are eager to take the fight to the clouds.
At $7.50, Dawn of War: Soulstorm and the Dawn of War II Multiplayer Beta is one of the nicest bargains to grace Steam in quite sometime.

You could, you know, mention a little about the game...
Like, which races are in Soulstorm? Is it the best/worst of the DoW games? Do we get to play any of the races from the other games? Etc..
Or is it just a beta key?Posted at 3:55AM on Jan 26th 2009 by t_m
