Will Wright's been at it again. After selling over 3 million copies of Spore across PC, Nintendo DS and mobile phones, EA Maxis has a pair of new PC games heading to stores this year. First up for gamers is the Spore Galactic Adventures expansion pack, which ships this spring. This summer will see the release of the first stand-alone game, Spore Creature Keeper, which is aimed at the younger demographic.
Since launching last September, over 65 million pieces of user-generated content have been created on Spore.com, thanks in part to the 6 million free Creature Creator downloads gamers have made online. That makes for one massive Sporepedia. But that's just the beginning, according to Lucy Bradshaw, vice president in charge of production at EA Maxis.
"We built Spore to be a platform," said Bradshaw. "It has a lot of new tech and a lot of design direction we can have fun and really play with. Much like The Sims, where we were able to take the franchise onto new platforms and do expansions on the PC, we're doing something similar with Spore."
First out of the gate is Spore Galactic Adventures, which adds several new layers of depth to user-generated creativity. "There are two parts to this expansion pack's new editors," explained Morgan Roarty, executive producer, Spore Galactic Adventures. "We're giving players all the tools that we used to create planets in Spore. The player can customize their own planets any way they want with volcanoes, rivers, mountains. The second half of the editor is adding actors to the world, which includes creatures, buildings and vehicles." In essence, all of those 65 million creations can now be utilized in new ways, including creating all-new buildings, spacecraft and planets.
"In Spore, you were able to create things like castle pieces and use them in the civ game, but now they can actually build a castle with a moat and all types of elaborate gates and doors," said Roarty. "That castle you created can be the background of a new adventure, since we're allowing players to create their own videogames."

That's right. Taking a page out of LittleBigPlanet, this new expansion pack will offer gamers an assortment of tools to not only build worlds, but create a variety of different videogames. Roarty said the tools include everything needed for multiple-act adventure games, classic side-scrolling platform games and objective-based games.
"You can create goals to drive players through these games and they can be anything from capture a flag to destroy a fortress to talking to an NPC," said Roarty. "We've set up power-ups, gates you run through, teleporters, and all of these classic gamer things. The gamers' are going to get a lot more out of Spore because there's going to be a wider array of games to create and play."
In terms of details, players with some free time on their hand will be able to input text for NPCs as part of an adventure game that can be uploaded to Spore.com and shared with the world. EA Maxis will be keeping an eye on these new adventures and showcasing the most popular and most innovative games, as well as tracking high scores and other achievements. And that's just part of what this new expansion pack offers.

I wish they'd make a "realistic" Spore game. Something complex with a lot of depth.Posted at 12:06AM on Jan 23rd 2009 by Einhanderkiller
