Valve's zombie shooter Left 4 Dead has continued to win a lot of end of year 2008 awards and now the game's official blog site has revealed more info on how the game's development team on how the title evolved from its beginning to its finished product.
The screenshot you see above is from a level in an early version of the game. Valve, however, felt the lighting of the level was too bright for a horror-themed game. Valve toned down the light and the number of light sources in later builds so players would know where to go. Lighting became a major theme in Left 4 Dead's development, including the use of weapon-mounted flashlights for players.

It's a pity the Blood Harvest level is completely borked when it comes to expecting attacks. You can walk through the forest, and have fifty zombies on each side of you and not even know until they swarm you. I can't tell how many versus games that has ruined. Sometimes there are like thirty zombies, other times there are hundreds in the first level alone.Posted at 2:28PM on Jan 5th 2009 by Ghede
