Left 4 Dead Guide: Upping the Death Toll

So you've bought Left 4 Dead, installed it, booted it up, and began a game with three of your best friends. But you are getting your ass kicked by the hordes of bloodthirsty zombies on the easiest difficulty setting. Not to fear! With our guide to the art (and zen) of zombie killing, you and your friends will be breakdancing through Hordes and dancing on cars with alarms in no time! Just try not to crash a car or destroy the landscape on your way through this guide. You wouldn't want a horde of zombies to attack you out of nowhere, now would you?

After escaping No Mercy, you celebrate your victory, watch the ending credits, and buckle down to face the next campaign. But which campaign should you do? There's three other campaigns available for you to play through: Death Toll, Dead Air, and Blood Harvest. Out of all these, the next one to play is Death Toll, both in the slight increase in difficulty and in the nice change of pace from the city in No Mercy. So away we go, staying one step ahead of death as we fight our way to the docks to be rescued.

General things to know

  • Unlike No Mercy, better weapons don't spawn in groups of three in random locations. Instead, certain spots will always have certain weapons. There are, of course, the standard locations where you will always get weapons, such as the finale house or the church.
  • During a Horde on Death Toll, Infected come from every direction. You'll be traversing through wide-open spaces, so be careful and guard all sides. When in doubt, throw a pipe bomb to lure Infected out of the trees.
  • As hinted above, Infected like to hide in the trees and surprise players as they walk by. Keep this in mind and actively clear them out so you aren't caught off guard and ruined by a group of sprinting, vomiting corpses.
  • There are no ways to alert a Horde unintentionally! Awesome! No car alarms are present in this campaign, so don't bother with worrying about what in the environment you are hitting. Blast away!
Stage 1: The Tunnel

Walkthrough: Welcome to Death Toll! You start off on the wrong side of a broken bridge on a road filled with abandoned cars. Make your way down into the ravine, and then up the ladders onto the other side of the bridge. Once you've reached the other side, forge through the tunnel until you pop out above. Then make your way to the drainage building and you've finished the first stage!

Horde Choke Points

  • Maintenance corridor in the tunnel. It's extremely narrow, easy to spot Infected in, and usually has another pistol on the ground inside.

Tips and Tricks

  • While not a choke point per se, the starting side of the broken bridge is a good defensive position, as the survivors can put their back to the drop and not worry about Infected climb up and attacking them.
  • The akimbo pistols are always in the tunnel. Make sure to find and grab them to up your firepower.
  • Special Infected have problems dealing with jumping and getting around cars in the tunnel. Use this to your advantage by hiding behind them and picking off enemies.
  • During a Horde in the tunnel, Infected will come from both sides, so make sure to cover your front and your rear without fail.
  • As mentioned before, watch out for Infected in the trees. This runs especially true for special infected like the Boomer, Smoker, or Hunter, as if they catch you off guard, you are as good as dead.

Stage 2: The Drains

Walkthrough
: Quite possibly the most boring part of the whole campaign, but it has the easiest defense. Make your way through the drainage canal to the gates. Lower them to cross over, summoning a Horde. Upon defeating the Horde, sprint through until you reach the surface inside a storehouse building. Exit the storehouse and go to the trainyard next to it, where you will see your next safehouse in a train car.

Horde Choke Points

  • At the top of the ladder to drop down into the drainage canals. Infected will only come from below and have to climb, giving you ample time to pick them off.
  • In the store room shortly after exiting the drains. The room has a sewer grate and a single door. The sewer grate forces Infected to climb, and the grate stops other infected, making this an easily defensible position as well.

Tips and Tricks

  • The most common place for a Tank to spawn in this level is immediately after exiting the storehouse, and with good reason. There's plenty of cars to toss about, the landscape is mostly open, and there's many different directions for common Infected to come from. It's a death trap waiting to happen.
  • Shortly after exiting the safehouse should be a table with an extra pistol and the advanced weapons on them, with an ammo stash nearby. Make sure to grab them!
  • Immediately after crossing the gates that summoned the Horde there is a closet. Inside is a first aid cabinet, ammo, and akimbo pistols. Also, if someone died while fighting the Horde, they will spawn in there.
  • The Witch tends to spawn in or around the exit from the drains to the storehouse. There are two exits from the drains, so if possible, just avoid her.
  • Infected have a nasty habit of dropping from above in this level. Make sure to watch vertical space as well as around you. Have a Horde suddenly drop on your face is very hazardous to your health.

Stage 3: The Church

Walkthrough
: After preparing yourself, work through the trainyard. After jumping on the train car and leaving, follow the road through blockades and houses up to the graveyard and Church. An insane man lives there, and he will ring the bell to attract infected to you. After fighting off a few waves, he will turn into a Smoker or Hunter, and you can enter the safehouse, kill him, and move on to the next level.

Horde Choke Points

  • Inside the trainyard office building by the train car used to leave. Any room in there is good, as in each room there are only two entrances that funnel enemies in.
  • In the small house that you have to go through to get past the blockade. There's ammo and weapons in there, and the rooms are all tiny, making it easy to take down huge groups of enemies.
  • Inside the church. There are three possible ways to get into the main part of church to attack the survivors, and all ways are extremely narrow. They are through the huge hole in the wall, the windows along the back, and through the ammo room. Just stick in the main room and protect your buddies and you should be fine.

Tips and Tricks

  • This level is littered with supplies. Weapons, ammo, grenades, it has it all. Make sure to grab and use propane and gas to your advantage.
  • If you are worried about the Infected in the trees by the road, throw a pipe bomb into them. It will attract all of the Infected and kill most of them, leaving you with a clear mind.
  • Don't bother trying to preserve the wooden barricades in the church. If you see an Infected on the other side, blast them through the barricade. They are already slowed by jumping in anyways.
  • This isn't a gameplay tip, but look at the names and dates on the wall of the church next to the safehouse door. They are the victims of the man ringing the bell. Creepy, huh?
  • You will always find a semi-automatic shotgun on the porch of the roadside house. There is also pills, pistols, and an ammo stash inside. Great for re-stocking!
