Interview: True Games talks about Mytheon

As we reported this morning, developer Petroglyph has teamed up with publisher True Games Interactive to release Mytheon, an upcoming micro-transaction based MMO game that's a mix of action, strategy and RPG. It's a big change for Petroglyph, the Las Vegas based company made up in part of former members of the now defunct Westwood Studios. The developer has released two traditional RTS retail games in its short life, the acclaimed Star Wars: Empire at War for publisher LucasArts and more recently the Sega published Universe at War: Earth Assault.

Before today's official announcement, Big Download got a chance to ask questions about the game to Peter Cesario, the director of product development at True Games. While they and Petroglyph are still keeping a number of details to themselves for now about Mytheon Cesario did give us some more info about the title than what was in this morning's press release.
How did the idea for Mytheon come about?

The original high concept was created by the talented group at Petroglyph about a year ago. Since True Games came on board as publishing partner we are working together with the Petroglyph team to flesh out some of the core mechanics as well as the back story. We've been anxious to announce details on Mytheon for awhile so this is an exciting time for us!

Why was the decision made to make this game a micro-transaction based online title?

Recognizing how momentum's been shifting away from the traditional retail model, Petroglyph had been exploring the possibility of getting into the online micro-transaction space for some time; True Games was of course founded on the online micro-transaction business model. And so, Petroglyph's development experience combined with True Games' expertise in this space made it a perfect fit for both parties.

How would you describe Mytheon? Is it an RTS MMO or something different?

Mytheon is best described as an MMO that combines the best elements of action/strategy and role-playing. It combines these elements in such a way that it's really a whole new genre unto itself.

Is there a fictional back story for the game?

Absolutely! The story of Mytheon is focused around the Fates having declared an end to the reign of Gods on Earth and a beginning to the reign of man. However, humanity must first prove itself worthy of freedom by recruiting Heroes from all walks of life to compete in challenges against the Gods themselves, who aren't going to relinquish power without a fight. As a player, you'll create your own hero to take on these challenges and help free humanity.

Mytheon plans to use established mythologies as its basis. Why go this route instead of creating your own mythologies?

Well the team has a real affinity for different mythologies. Using established myths gives us an incredibly rich and diverse amount of source material to pull from to create a fun and unique game. Using established mythologies also provides players with an instant degree of familiarity. Where we are putting our own spin on these mythologies will be in the way they are woven together and in the way players are able to interact with the different mythological creatures.

Why were the Greek myths chosen for this first release and what other mythologies do you have planned for adding?

As well as being extremely rich in content, Greek mythology is arguably the most widely known of all the worlds' mythologies. Because of these two important factors it just seemed a natural starting point from which we can eventually branch out to several unique and interesting mythologies from around the world.

What can you tell us about the character classes in Mytheon?

Well, we aren't revealing any specifics about the characters just yet, but what I can say is that there will be three distinct and powerful classes at launch; each specializing in a specific "Power Stone" discipline such as summoning or healing. We'll be releasing in-depth details on each class soon.
