15 year old collapses after marathon Lich King play session
As WoW Insider points out the game was released last week to millions of World of Warcraft fans and nearly all of them know that massive and long sessions of playing the game should be broken up by, you know, food and sleep. The fact that some mainstream media outlets are making this a major story says more about them than the 15 year old who made a bad decision.

Its a game. I'm fifteen, and I play WoW a whole lot. But I'm smart enough to realize when to stop. Not even the best game in the world, is worth playing that long =]. Plus, the game came out on a wednesday, shouldn't he have been in SCHOOL?Posted at 2:43PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Schnell
I am just wondering. . . . what level did he get to? Does anyone know?Posted at 2:57PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Amarantha
Geez....the kid must have a crappy home life to be playing the game that long. He must be starved for attention at home. You mean no one bothered to go up to his room and check on him? He probably figured the only way someone would pay attention to him is if he collapsed from starvation and not enough sleep. Fifteen hours straight? What about school and homework? Either the parents were away or they just didn't give a crap about their kid.Posted at 3:20PM on Nov 18th 2008 by verano
Wasn't it EQ2 that once included an automatic link to pizza hut, so you could order food with minimal interruption? How did that work out?Posted at 5:09PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Paul
I have a very intelligent, level headed, 16 yr old SWM living at home. He has one flaw: video gaming. Is it our fault? Perhaps. But, here we are. On weekends, he holes up and does nothing but game. He has eaten cold meals and foregone learning how to drive in favor of this habit. Rather than point fingers at who is to blame, where do we go from here?
Yes, it can happen. Yes we do check on him. No, he is not out partying and making trouble- is this a catch 22 or a new societal problem? Let's work together and think about solutions rather than criticizing.Posted at 3:59PM on Nov 18th 2008 by IBTLC
15 hours is normal for my husband (on weekends) to play World of Warcraft...but where were this kids parents while he was sitting in front of the comp for that long? This game is very addictive...but at least my husband works everyday and spends plenty of time with me..its just something they get so into they can't let it go..believe me I live with it everyday. I play wow everychance i get. I wonder did he make it to 80???Posted at 4:56PM on Nov 18th 2008 by D
I honestly believe that there must be something else going on here, I am a 40 Yr old man with Diabetes and I have been on longer than that (except for pee breaks and unless you have a cath in you you kinda have to have these) the only thing that I had was swelling in the legs. I really think that there is another medical problem here.Posted at 6:44PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Xorlin
15 hours is not that long a time. There has to be more than just playing a game at work here is he collapsed after that short a time. Even 15 hours with no food or sleep would do that to a person. Heck, most of us are awake more than 15 hours a day anyway, right?Posted at 6:58PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Sammy
I also have boys that play video games. But, they are doing that while the other boys are out drinking alcohol and using drugs. So, I say take your pick.
I will tak the video games in moderation.Posted at 7:01PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Kate
Only 15 hours?

if he collapsed after 15 hours, thats pathetic. chances are he was out drinking with friends or something on the midnight release and over did it with the booze. ive played for over 2 days and was fine, this is ridiculousPosted at 8:02PM on Nov 18th 2008 by thomas
everyone responds differently to going 15hrs with out food or sleep while doing an activity that keeps you stationary. thing is, MOST wow players stop to grab food and potty breaks. sure it may be 5mins here and there but that's a long enough break for you to get your bearings and is highly recommended by those who actually WORK at computers for hours on end, and high speed gamers. can't really get what you want/need out of a game unless you take a break and then come back refreshed enough to tackle it how you want. something else is going on with this kid and his family for him to fall out like that. lack of attention? sure, but he could also not have the most healthy diet and lifestyle in the world to begin with. if you don't take care of yourself, you SHOULD EXPECT to collapse after 15hrs of no food or sleep, even if all you're doing is playing a video game. anything can be addictive. let's not blame the game. we probably can't even blame the parents. there's only so much they can do. after a certain age, the kid needs to wise up. sure an addiction to wow beats drugs/alcohol, but an addiction is an addiction and it sounds like this kid needs help. i heard once of a game that would just shut down after few hours. it was a sign to the players to go do something else b/c it just ain't healthy to have marathon sessions without some breaks. should we do something like this? sometimes it takes a third party for ppl to get the hint. esp with kids. how many of US listened to our parents telling us to stop doing something and go play outside/do your homework/do your chores/etc? by the games stepping up, the parents have the ammo they need to say, "i told you so!," without actually saying. mom and dad get the satisfaction that the kid hasn't turned into a gaming zombie, kids don't have (more) healthy problems and games stop getting a bad rap. it's worth looking into. we've got to work together on this, y'all! :)Posted at 10:16PM on Nov 18th 2008 by Devynn

My cousin works for blizzard, evidently they had issues like that in china. It's not really the kid though, it's the parents IMOPosted at 7:49PM on Nov 17th 2008 by Brian Cox
