C&C: Red Alert 3 CD Key not complete for all copies
Now comes word that the just released Electronic Arts RTS game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 has some issues of their own. Thankfully it's not quite as bad as the first two cases. Apparently a small number of copies were shipped with manuals that displayed only 19 of the 20 needed characters for the CD Key. The official Command and Conquer web site has posted up word on how to fix this problem.
One is simply to guess and enter the last character yourself (A-Z and 0-9). If this happens not to work you are asked to contact EA customer support and email or fax a picture of the manual showing the missing character. Again this doesn't seem to affect every copy shipped; our review copy of Red Alert 3 has all 20 characters for its CD Key.

F*cking christ, this CD key crap is getting out of hand. Their purpose is debatable in the first place considering that the only people putting them in paid for the damn game. I guess that is one way to prevent piracy, don't give anyone the ability to play the game.

I got in just fine, was missing a character and it was pretty laughable that EA actually suggested to guess as per the instructions.
However it was only a few minutes of laughing before I continued install. Annoying and unnecessary! But certainly nothing to get your panties in a knot about.Posted at 10:05PM on Nov 1st 2008 by Kobura

This is kind of stupid. I'd bet you a dollar that the last digit (probably more than one, actually) is just part of a checksum, so if they really wanted to they could release a tool that let you type in the first 19 chars and get the 20th one out. I have to try entering up to 36 guesses instead? EA is all kinds of on-the-ball this month. It's astounding that they're losing money...Posted at 7:39AM on Oct 31st 2008 by James
