Interview: EALA talks about Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

It's perhaps the biggest RTS PC game shipping to stores this fall and its finally here this week. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is the long awaited next game in the over-the-top version of the franchise from publisher Electronic Arts. Time travel, wild units, and Jenny McCarthy as Tanya all await gamers as the title from EA's Los Angeles studio ships to stores.

We managed to get a last minute interview out of the game's producer Greg Kasavin as he talks about making the game, their plans for downloadable content in the future, whether or not there will be an expansion pack to the game, and more.
First, it's been a long time coming for fans of the Red Alert franchise with at least one false start publicly mentioned. How has it been developing a game that has been so long awaited?

We knew we were going to have some big shoes to fill trying to come up with the next installment in the Red Alert series, and the team is filled with people with a real reverence for Command & Conquer's roots. So we explored which aspects of Red Alert we wanted to make sure to preserve, and thought carefully about how we could make a Red Alert game in this day and age that made players feel as they did when they fired up Red Alert 2 seven-or-so years ago. At the same time, since it's been so long since the last Red Alert, we knew it was unreasonable to expect for all our players to have firsthand knowledge of the past game. So we wanted to make a game that stood tall on its own merits while still being faithful to the tone and spirit of its predecessor. What we ended up with, as you might expect, was a mix of some familiar concepts as well as many new ones. We hope people find it to be a fresh experience that harks back to all the best parts of the classic Command & Conquer gameplay, which in many ways defined the real-time strategy genre.

How does the storyline in Red Alert 3 relate to the first two games in the series?

Like previous games in the series, Red Alert 3 takes place in an alternate reality where World War II never happened and the Soviet Union instead grew far more powerful. However, much like Red Alert 2 in particular, the game doesn't take itself terribly seriously--although the characters in it are very serious about the ridiculous circumstances they find themselves in. This time around, the game begins with the Soviets on the verge of defeat by Allied forces, so they hatch a last-ditch plot to manipulate time and prevent the Allied advantage. Unfortunately for them, this plan turns out to have some pretty nasty consequences, giving rise to a new world power: the Empire of the Rising Sun. So now the Soviets have mucked everything up and are caught in a massive, world-wide three-way struggle. You'll get to play through campaigns from each of the three faction's perspectives to see how their interconnected stories all pan out. There are throwbacks to previous games in the series but you don't need to be familiar with previous Red Alert games to get into this one. In fact, most of the characters in Red Alert 3 and many of the units are new to this game.
