Adventure games on the PC have been a small niche market, at least in the US, for several years now. We are not saying this is a bad thing. We are just pointing out that the adventure game genre doesn't appeal to the mass market as it once did (unless you are making a Nancy Drew title).
But publisher dtp Entertainment may have solved that issue, at least for us, with a new feature in their upcoming historical adventure game Mata Hari. Based on the real life female entertainer who spied on the Germans in WWI, the game will feature what they are calling a "seduction" mode. Basically you have to catch musical notes with your mouse cursor as Mata Hari "dances". The more successful you are at this the more money you get from your audience.
The press release points out that players can skip the "seduction" mode entirely and focus on Mata Hari's typical point-and-click adventure game style. But hey, why would you want to? There's another plus to the game; former LucasArts adventure game vets Hal Barwood and Noah Falstein contributed to its story and game design. dtp Entertainment plans to release the game in Germany this November but there's no word on a US release yet.
