So what does all this mean for the MMO developer? Big Download got a quick update on the company's plans as their director of communications Adam Mersky answered our questions.
First, how did the idea come about to expand the company and why was Redwood City, CA picked as the location?
Turbine is a company on the rise. We are in the midst of a long-term growth plan that requires us to bring in the best talent in the industry. Our Westwood, MA studio has grown over 30% since the beginning of 2008 and we still have 50 openings that we are currently trying to fill. The west coast has a wealth of talent and it made perfect sense of us to establish a presence out there to support this growth.
Turbine tried to expand to the west coast before in 2004 in Santa Monica but closed those operations less than two years later. What is the big difference between that failed attempt and launching the new Redwood City, CA branch?
Turbine has come a long way in the past several years. We have a completely different management team in place, a strong group of investors behind us including Time Warner, we've launched two award-winning MMOs and are now deploying our franchises around the world.
What can you tell us about what the new Redwood City branch will be working on at this time?
The California studio is working on several initiatives at the moment that supports the overall corporate plans. It's no secret that we are deep in development on an MMO for the next-generation consoles but we are also working on technology that will allow players to generate their own content in our worlds and we will continue to build tools that power the social networks that surround our games.
How will this new office affect your Boston based studios? Will there be a reduction in staff there, will it stay the same or will it also expand?
Our studio is growing and in fact, we just opened up another office here in MA to handle this growth. The California studio is all about accelerating our growth plans and making sure that we can bring in the best people in the industry whether they are based out in CA or on the east coast.
Currently Turbine is running three PC MMOs. Is the company happy with the current state of affairs in terms of subscriptions and revenue?
We are very happy with the success of our titles to date. Since both the launch of Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online we've been very busy delivering substantial content updates to our subscribers while also localizing the game for new markets. This success is driving much of our aggressive growth plans going forward.
