Interview: Pete Hines on Fallout 3 Two

Some people have actually wondered if Fallout 3 is going to be a "short" game compared to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion yet it seems like it will be a very lengthy game experience. Why do you think people are so concerned about Fallout 3's length?

No idea. When there are any number of games out there that take 8, 10, 12 hours to finish, and you've got one you can play for over 100, I don't think I'd be concerned about it being "short." We have people here who have been playing the game for literally years and still are seeing things they'd never seen before, so I don't think we're too concerned about whether there's enough to see and do.

It seems like Fallout 3 will be getting a ton of promotion, far more than any other Bethesda Softworks game. Can you give us an idea of the extent of the promotion and how much the budget is (especially since Valve has revealed it's spending $10 million for Left 4 Dead)?

We don't release details like that, but it's certainly a game we've gone all out for. We felt the game deserved, and the level of interest merited it. So I've spent a lot of time working on things we've never done before...big presences at PAX, taking over all the ad space in Metro Center in Washington, DC, giant Brotherhood of Steel statues in stores across the States and around the world...it goes on and on. We didn't leave a stone unturned in making sure folks knew about the game.

It was announced at E3 that the PC version of the game (along with the Xbox 360 port) would get exclusive downloadable content What can you tell us about the first release of such content and when we can expect to see it released?

All I can tell you is that we're aiming for DLC that is around the same size as Knights of the Nine was for Oblivion. Something that adds content and hours of gameplay. When it will be out or what exactly it will be is not something we're ready to talk about just yet.

Now that the game is done has there been a final decision on whether or no to release the game's editing tools?

Nothing final on that yet. When we have an update on it one way or the other, we'll let folks know.

Any updates on the two upcoming Bethesda Softworks published games (Rogue Warrior and the Splash Damage developed title) that you can reveal to us at this time?

No updates, focused on talking about Fallout 3 right now.

Finally, can you give us any hints on what the Fallout 3 team will be doing for their next full game? Will it be a return to the Elder Scrolls series, another Fallout game or something completely different?

Sorry, no hints. We haven't even shipped Fallout 3 yet so we're going to focus attention on that for a while.
