Tiberium canceled; unknown number of EALA team members released
Rumors of the game's cancellation first appeared in last month's Game Informer magazine. At the time of the magazine's story Big Download emailed EA PR reps for confirmation who at that time told us the game was still under development. However Kotaku has posted up what they say is an internal memo from EA confirming the cancellation of Tiberium. The reasons are simple, according to the memo: "The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn't coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers."
The memo also states that "this action will result in several individuals on the team being released." Exact numbers were not mentioned but the memo does state EA will try to place those affected team members within other projects at EALA or other studios within the publisher.

The real problem started with them placing Chris Plummer in charge. The dude had no idea how to make a video game and had mostly marketing experience - no actual game dev experience other then a few nightmare projects at EALA. He didn't listen to any of the more experienced staff and changed his mind every few months, causing the team to churn and burn things over and over. The project ended up costing as much as a Hollywood movie and wasting years of people's time. You simply cannot succeed when the guy at the head of the project has no idea what he's making, and no idea how to really do it. I'm amazed they let him churn and burn for 4 years on it. Sad... there were some great ideas in the game and some great people on the team.

This is a huge shame, the FPS/Real Time Strategy hybrid that was offered up in the GameInformer article sounded like it could have some real potential. Not to say the build they had was any good, but I was really hoping to see that formula done right. I thought C&C was a perfect environment for that.Posted at 9:00PM on Oct 9th 2008 by Graham

Too bad. I was looking forward to this one. I guess after what we saw with Renegade, C&C just isn't meant to be a shooter.Posted at 3:35PM on Sep 30th 2008 by Steven Wong
