Mass Effect movie rights bought?

There have been few video game-to-movie adaptations that have actually worked but that isn't stopping Hollywood from trying and trying and trying to get it right. Variety's Cut Scene blog reports on rumors that the latest attempt to make such a film work could be Mass Effect, the sci-fi RPG from BioWare that Electronic Arts released on the PC earlier this year.

The story uses unnamed sources as its basis so technically this is still a rumor but the story states that former Marvel Studios head man Avi Arad is the one who has optioned the Mass Effect movie rights. Arad is now an independent producer who runs Seaside Entertainment. Under his new company he bought the movie rights to Capcom's action game Lost Planet which is now under development at Warner Bros. The story does not mention if a writer or director has been secured for any Mass Effect movie.
