I actually enjoyed the cell phase quite a bit. It wasn't perfect,
but I liked the way you had to swim around and fight off the
mish-mash of other organisms. It portrayed the primordial soup, so to speak, rather well, in my opinion.
I have mixed feelings about the creature phase. I would have much rather seen some more like the cell phase here, where you explore the environment at-will, rather than being tied to a nest and being the sole creature doing any exploring. This way, you could have either been a solitary animal, hunting around and then searching for a mate, or allow you to grow a pack organically. I presume that this was the original intention of the game, and that they had to scale it back to its current form for technical reasons. But your point about social creatures is certainly true as well. The game is much more suited to carnivorous creatures. I would have much rather seen the social game take place between members of your own species. Inter-species alliances/sociability doesn't make much sense; why are you making friends with your competitors when that doesn't help the expansion of your genes, and might actually hurt it? Basically, the creature creator saves the creature phase; it's an absolute blast to watch your creature evolve, even if any evolutionary constraints are entirely self-imposed (other than herbivore/omnivore/carnivore).Posted at 2:28PM on Sep 14th 2008 by Adam
Could you not find any recent screenshots of the game for the article? There's a number of them you've used that are very obviously from old builds of the game, for no apparent reason.Posted at 2:37PM on Sep 14th 2008 by Mythor

Even if you don't "like" Spore, it's still an incredible accomplishment in engineering and design, that most people can at least appreciate if not enjoy.
I think people let their imaginations run wild when they saw some of the demonstrations of it, but I for one feel like they delivered on every point.Posted at 10:53AM on Sep 15th 2008 by wiredknight
Really, Kevin949? You really need it explained to you? You really need someone to tell you why it's a bad idea to hold up outdated examples that do not represent the finished product in a critique of the finished product?
It's like writing a review of the game and using screenshots from an Alpha client. And there's no excuse for it, since the game is out and there's ample opportunity to capture some relevant screenshots. The BigDownload writer was clearly just too damn lazy to do so.Posted at 4:04PM on Sep 15th 2008 by Mythor

So where's the list guys? Or is your 'top 10' a collection of pictures?Posted at 2:19PM on Sep 14th 2008 by Kuhnaydeein
