The long time director of the Game Developers Conference is heading out to do other things. Gamasutra (owned by GDC's parent company Think Services) has revealed that Jamil Moledina is leaving his position. The article gives the good old-fashioned vague reason of wanting to "pursue other interests" as the reason for his departure. After serving as editor-in-chief of Game Developer magazine, Moledina took over as executive director of GDC in 2005 and became a very public advocate of the game industry. While no replacement was named, Meggan Scavio will continue as Event Director for GDC; she has worked with the conference for the past eight years.GDC 2009 will take place in San Francisco on March 23-27.

Wow, that is kind of surprising. Jamil has done great things for the conference since he took over, not only putting it on the map for the mainstream but making it a popular place for announcements too. I've seen numerous interviews with him and his passion and enthusiasm for the industry really show. That is a loss. Hopefully he goes on to bigger and better things and GDC continues to grow in is absence.
