QuakeCon 2008: Money, t-shirts and a car given out on the final night

The final full day of QuakeCon 2008 ended on Saturday night with a marathon six hour event-party for the attendees. The results were that free food and beer (courtesy of id Software's John Carmack) were given to QuakeCon attendees and they got to see great Quake Live and Enemy Territory:Quake Wars matches along with some Guitar Hero playing, some prizes and t-shirts thrown out and a brand new Chevrolet Corvette given out to one very lucky QuakeCon participant.

In terms of the matches, The four member The Green Team won the Xbox 360 Enemy Territory: Quake Wars tournament over Cwell Fellas and won $5,000. The PC Enemy Territory: Quake Wars tournament was won by the six member Mamut.Si over second place Kompaniet and won $8,000. The Guitar Hero III 1v1 tournament was won by JW2 over Oni_link while Jimmy Crack Corn won against Pointless Thread in the 2v2 tournament.

The big money was in the Quake Live tournament, which is the upcoming free-to-play version of id's multiplayer shooter Quake III Arena. The CTF tournament was won by the four man team Billy Mays Daze over second place finisher Rage; they won $8,000. The 1v1 tournament was won by Cypher over ZeRo 4 in a final night match that Cypher mostly dominated (although ZeRo 4 made it interesting in the final seconds). Cypher won $5,000 for the efforts.

One QuakeCon attendee was picked from 250 winners of a prized blue ticket giveaway to win a new 2008 Chevrolet Corvette. Tickets were given out in many ways during QuakeCon; via raffles, goofy contests, Quick-Draw tournaments, and even tickets found when QuakeCon 2008 t-shirts are thrown out to attendees. One check from QuakeCon went to a more serious cause. The first ever QuakeCon charity poker tournament raised over $10,000 for the Child's Play charity.

Overall if you were a QuakeCon attendee you certainly had a lot of fun with all of the events held at the show this year (and hey you can't go wrong with a free event). For the news media it was a mixed bag with little new in the way of id Software announcement. On the other hand, id's master programmer John Carmack was much more available to chat with the press this year than he has been in previous years.
