Illinois introduces MMO legislation

After playing Final Fantasy XI for a few months, young Alex Edwards asked his parents to cancel the account. Mr and Mrs Edwards, who were paying $13 a month for their son's online game, obliged their son -- but only after one hour and 45 minutes on the phone with Square Enix customer support.

According to Alley Insider, the Edwards family's MMO cancellation woes entailed not only a call with customer support that lasted almost two hours, but some detective work necessary to track down the phone number in the first place. No overt method of online cancellation could be found by the Edwards, and their discovery of a phone number came about only due to referencing their monthly credit card statement. Finally, after the aforementioned time spent on hold, a Square Enix representative picked up the phone and canceled the Edwards' FFXI account.

Rather than curse out the developer, Mr Edwards took his frustration to close friend Raymond Poe, a representative in the Edwards' home state of Illinois. This past week saw Illinois pass a law stating that all MMOs must offer their subscribers a method of online cancellation, effectively leveling up the ease with which players can opt out of their MMO accounts.
