E3 08: Wanted PC Impressions

Every time at E3, there's a game that you have never heard of before you arrive that you get to see and totally surprises you. For us, that game at E3 2008 was Wanted, a title that actually serves as a sequel to the impressive Universal Studios action game based (loosely) on the Top Cow comic book from writer Mark Millar and artist J.G. Jones.

At a last minute appointment during E3 we got to see a quick live demo of the Wanted game at Warner Bros. Interactive's meeting room (the company is distributing the title) on an Alienware PC using an Xbox 360 Windows controller. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, here's a MAJOR SPOILER WARNING as we intend to talk about the ending in the next paragraph

The ending of the movie version of Wanted had Fox (Angelina Jolie's character) kill the members of the assassin's group The Fraternity and sacrifice herself in the process. Morgan Freeman's character Sloan is dispatched by Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy's character) in the final scene. The game takes place immediately after that as Wesley gets out of the chair that he sat to kill Slone from a distance. However he is then attacked by folks he doesn't know. As it turns out, the game will deal with Gibson dealing with mother issues much like he dealt with father issues in the movie.

The live demo we got to see takes place during a scene where Wesley is in a commercial airliner which apparently has been attacked by the folks who want to see him dead. The demo was a good place to show off a couple of Wanted's gameplay features. One was its cover system. Wesley is see moving cover items (in the plane it's a drink cart) to avoid being shot by the assassins who are after him on the plane. Wesley is able to use blind shooting to his advantage in the game. He can made his enemies believe he is one place while moving to attack them in the other direction.

Yes, there is bullet curving in the game just like in the movie. It's handled much like playing a golf game; as Wesley gets an enemy in his sights, he can get under cover and click on on a button to reveal a while arc that can be adjusted to target a silhouetted enemy so he can curve his shot to take him out. The demo also showed Wesley do things like shoot the plane door in mid-flight that not only sweeps out opponents in the wind but actually bends the entire plane level. Wesley was also seen doing some quick melee attacks with a handy knife; it's not all about shooting.

The game is being developed by GRIN (who are also making Bionic Commando) and the visuals use their own in-house graphics engine. The result is an impressive looking game that also uses James McAvoy's likeness (it's currently unknown if he will return to force his character). The game is being produced by Peter Wanat who produced two more successful games based on Universal movie properties; The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Scarface: The World is Yours. Wanat told us that they have been working directly with the movie's director Timur Bekmambetov and that even Millar has had some input (he will contribute to some of the game's dialogue).

With a top-notch developer making the Wanted game and a producer who knows how to make movie-based games better than most, Wanted might be worth looking into. The game is currently scheduled for release this fall.
