Our single player demo began with us driving a armored carrier armed with a heavy gun as we escorted a friend of ours through the jungle in another section of the island featured in the first game. The demo had us shooting tons of targets who wanted use to die painful deaths. North Korean infantry, jeeps, manned gun emplacements, trucks and even helicopters stood in our paths as we traversed the path. However, the armor of our vehicle combined with our powerful cannon on top made short work of most of out opponents. It was very much like playing a rail shooter except you did have some freedom to shoot at targets and even get out of the vehicle to take on the enemy on foot. Oh, and stuff exploded. Exploded in large quantities. It was basically like being in a Michael Bay movie on steroids.
We finally got to our destination, a landing place for a friendly VTOL air vehicle. After we took care of the enemies who tried to raid our landing zone we got another mission. We were instructed via radio to retrieve some computer data in an enemy base and then head to an awaiting submarine. This time we got a armored carrier with a less powerful chaingun but it still was fun to use it on enemy patrols and yet another attack helicopter.
Finally we arrived at the enemy base and after getting on foot to shoot at some more North Koreans we entered the office to retrieve the data and proceeded to the sub. After shooting a few more enemies and taking out a tank with a sticky C4 explosive, we entered the submarine and that's where our hands-on E3 2008 demo ended.
Visually Crysis Warhead looks as good as the 2007 original with impressive character modeling, deep jungle plants and trees (which you can run over with your heavy carrier vehicle) and especially the visual effects for fire and explosions which you will see in large quantities. We asked about their plans for the multiplayer Crysis Wars that was revealed a few days ago but unfortunately we were told nothing could be revealed about that aspect of the game yet.
All in all, Crysis Warhead looks to be as expected; a visually great looking shooter that will share nearly everything that Crysis' single player had in the first place. There were no aliens, no zero-gee environments and no freezing cold terraforming in our demo but we are betting that shooting North Koreans won't be the only thing you can do in the game. Look for more info on Crysis Warhead before Crytek and EA release the game to stores this fall.
